A Brief History of Cardiff Castle
This of course is just one of the many castles in Wales. This castle may not be the biggest or best but it is the most popular one in Wales simply because it makes its home in the city centre.
Cardiff Castle
This castle lies slap bang in the middle of a busy city and was first used by the Romans. The Normas stepped in to take control and they covered the original fort with ramparts and their own defences. The great thing is that over the next three centuries the castle was never stopped when it came to improvements. The 12th century saw only one realy improvement and that was a stone keep whereas between the 13th and 14th a gatehouse and the black tower were both added.
In 1423 the Earl of Warwick added another tower to the west side of the castle and then the Herbert family continued to improve it near the end of the 16th century. The castle fell into a very bad state of disrepair in the 17th and 18th centuries as it was left.
It was not lost alltogether as 1766 saw the year in which Lord Mountstuart took possession of the castle and slowly started to buld the place up again.
William Burges was given complete freedom in 1869 to do whatever he wanted to do with the castle and he did just that. This is how tourists see the castle today.
Nowadays the castle is opened to many tourists and is open every single day of the year apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
There are so many things that you can see in the castle from the keep to the military museum so why not think about taking one of those family days out to the place. You could of course just take a family holidays UK to Cardiff to enjoy the place at your own leisure.
