Investing into IRAs and 401ks

Dec 15, 2009

Did you know most people are allowed to invest in both 401ks and IRAs at the same time? There may be certain rules and regulations, but in general most people can invest into both of these plans.

So, what is a 401k plan? What a 401k is, is a retirment account that lets employees grow their money tax free. The money which is deposited into the plan is deposited before it can be taxed and it is free to grow interest without being slowed down by taxes.

The employer normally manages the plan and deposits a percentage of their employees income in the plan before it can be taxed.

What is an IRA? An IRA is pretty much the same thing except with a few major differences. For starters IRAs are set up by an individual that is responsible for the plan. The major advantage of an IRA is that it may come with many other added investment options.

For example while most 401k plans invest in mutual funds and bonds IRAs may be allowed to invest into stocks and in some cases even real estate.

Most people can invest into both of these plans, but there are a few exceptions. If the employee has a very high income then they may not be allowed to do so.

Both of these plans are meant to be for retirement and as a result both the 401k withdrawal rules and the IRA distribution rules do not allow investors to take money out of their account unless they are either 59 ½ or do not mind paying an early withdrawal penalty.

Combining these two plans can be a big help and aid you to save enough money to retire of off.
