Why People Invest In Dividend Stocks

Dec 19, 2009

Dividend investing can be a passive way of making money from the stock market. There are a few different reasons people will invest into dividend stocks.

1. Income

The best part about dividend paying stocks is that they produce a very easy income. It can take a lot of money to actually get the income that you want however. One ratio that you can use is called the dividend yield ratio to get an idea of how much money it would take to get the kind of cash flow off of the investment that you would want.

For example if the stock is paying out 8% and you want to make $80,000 a year off of your investment it would take an investment of $1,000,000 in order to do that. Of course there is still uncertainty out there, you never know for sure what will happen. But the dividend yield ratio will at least give you some idea of what to expect.

2. Combined With Other Strategies

A lot of different companies pay dividends. This mean whatever your strategy is you can combine it with dividends to make some extra money. If you are looking for value stocks you can look for value stocks with dividends, if you are looking for growth stocks you can look for growth stocks that pay dividends, etc.. After all dividends are like free money which gives you some cash flow without forcing you to take on any more risk?

3. Can Indicate Strength

One great thing about dividend paying stocks is that they usually will have some income. If the company can afford to spend money handing out a large dividend that could mean the company is making money.

What this means is that the company may be stable or growing which can be a very good thing. However just because a company does have high dividends does not mean it is a good investment.

There are too many other reasons why a company would want to raise their dividends. Because of this it can be a good idea to look at other fundamental factors.
