Oil Shortages Force Hundreds Of Schools To Close

Jan 31, 2010

After the Christmas holidays, hundreds of schools have not reopened as the cold weather has forced them to keep their doors shut. The fact that there is a shortage of heating oil or gas is the main reason behind the closure of most of these schools. Shockingly one school had to close when they realised that their heating oil supply had actually been stolen by thieves.

In order to keep heating systems running efficiently over the holidays, many schools were forced to keep their heating systems on. This meant less fuel available when they returned and a lot of schools are now awaiting emergency deliveries of oil. Some schools even had to close due to their oil supply pipes being frozen. It has been many years since the country has faced such prolonged and heavy snowfalls. The snow has been lying in a lot of parts of the country for nearly three weeks with no sign that things are to improve any time soon.

The closure of schools during this period of heavy snow and freezing temperatures, left them prime targets for the new trend of stealing heating oil. Police have stated that the school in question had about 1000 litres of its heating oil siphoned off while the school was closed. But other schools that have heating systems that kick in when the temperature drops to a certain level were left with dwindling supplies of heating oil. The freezing temperatures over the Christmas holidays meant that their heating systems were on a lot of the time and used up most of their oil supplies.

Many people are finding it impossible to get out of their homes and get to work because of the weather. And with hundreds of schools being forced to close, there are many parents out there who simply cannot get to work because they have no one to care for their children.

Getting the home heated up during winter can be very expensive. Fuel such as electricity and gas show no signs of coming down in price. Clever people are switching to heating oil as a fuel though. And when this happens they have to ensure the tanks re always full of Boilerjuice to make sure they don’t run dry in the cold weather.
