Building A Picnic Table With DIY Plans

Aug 11, 2010

Need a place to sit and relax or maybe a spot to gather with family and friend outdoors to enjoy an outdoor meal, adding a picnic table to your property can be a great solution. Lots of style varieties are available to fill the requirements you have. There can be an enormous selection of tables available at home improvement stores, but you will need to consider the quality along with the price. Making one from scratch can save you money, and can also be customized to your needs. One great thing of doing it yourself is you can build it to the exact size you require, design it your way and paint or stain it the way you like.

Building one yourself is a very rewarding project whether you are a beginner or experienced woodworker. The style you choose to build will vary from traditional which will be a simple to build design, to more complex styles that will require more time, experience, and tools to build. A basic picnic table can be built in one day with simple hand tools, a hammer, nails, handsaw, and ruler. If you enjoy building projects a miter saw can be a great tool to own. It can save you time and will be very accurate when doing angle cuts. You may also want to replace a hammer and nails with wood screws and a drill. Screws will provide much better holding over time and usage.

Picnic table plans can be very useful if you do not want to design it yourself. Some of the parts used to build a picnic table will require angle cuts. If you have blueprints to help you, you can eliminate figuring out the angle cuts. Picnic table plans should include a materials list, drawings, and instructions on how to build it.

Buying the lumber will as well be another thing to consider. Some designs may use 2X6 lumber for the seats and table top. The material used in the blueprints will usually be available at your home improvement store. Pine is the most common lumber used to build. Using pressure treated lumber can make the table last many more years. Painting or staining untreated wood is recommended to give it protection. If you use treated lumber, you should wait six months to seal or paint it. Hopefully, you will get many years of enjoyment out of your picnic table.
