Enrich Your Garden By Making Compost

Aug 26, 2010

Making compost can be great for your plants and is also great for the environment, making it can be so simple that any one can do it. Compost has been defined as a mixture of decaying organic matter, like manure, lawn clippings, and leaves, typically used to bring back the nutrients to the soil, and to understand how to compost is simply becoming aware of ways to hasten the natural biological process which reduces organic waste to the point where it can no longer be broken down. Composting is an excellent way to improve soil texture resourcefully and quickly and as well give nutrients that the soil is lacking, moisture and air circulation for healthy growing garden plants.

It can be pretty simple learning how to compost. Lots of stuff can be put in the compost bin except human, dog and cat waste. The compost pile should always have”greens” and “browns.” Browns are the carbon-rich ingredients like leaves, shredded papers, branches, twigs, and hay. Greens are ingredients with nitrogen, such as lawn clippings, manure, fruits, vegetables, and many other items.. Browns are usually bulky and promote aerations while greens are generally extremely high in moisture and will balance out the aridity of the browns.

Knowing how to make compost will mean learning what to put in your compost bin and knowing how to mix it together to speed up the composting process.

Compost will require air so it is a good idea to have holes on your compost bin to provide air circulation. A compost pile on the ground needs to be turned or stirred at least once a week to offer the microbes plenty of air they will need to survive and also to prevent unwanted organisms from taking over the pile and causing a foul smell. The compost also needs enough water to keep it about as damp as a wrung-out sponge.

Composting might not completely restore the soil, but it will help balance and enrich the soil in your garden. Will Rogers, the great humorist who lived through the famous dust bowl, once remarked: “They’re making more people every daybut they ain’t making any more dirt.” With his inimitable wisdom and foresight, Will Rogers fittingly stated without compromise why composting is important today.
