So you’re a bicyclist. You’re going on a road trip. Is your bike left behind or do you bring it with you?

The answer is obvious – take it with you!

I don’t need to tell you of the joys of biking. It’s good exercise, you get places a lot faster than if you were jogging, and you can see all the beautiful scenery across this great country.

So why aren’t you leaping up and down to take your bike with you?

Worries about packing space? If you’ve got all your luggage in your trunk there’s no room for your bike.

The hassle? And even if you do have enough room in the car, you’ll probably have to take the wheel off to fit it in, and the bike or car might end up getting scratched.

There is a simple solution for this – a car bike rack. There are two main types of bike carriers – rear mounted ones (that obviously go on the back of your car), and one that fits on the car roof. The type you get really comes down to what suits your needs best.

Put off by the cost of buying a bike rack? Well, think about it. Keeping yourself healthy on the road is always an important need – health costs from lack of exercise can be huge! You’ll probably be able to rent a bike at your destination but there’s the cost of the rental – and frankly the bike itself will not be of the highest quality.

There’s such a thing as serendipity. You may be visiting a place that you’re unfamiliar with, so you won’t think to bring your bike. When you get there you discover that there is some fantastic scenery around that you can see – in a park, along a trail, etc! – and you without your bicycle. So make a habit of taking your bike with you everywhere, and because you have a bike carrier, it couldn’t be easier.

Family Fun With a Bicycle

The best time to get children involved in biking is when they are young.

It’s an unfortunate fact that children these days don’t get enough exercise. They spend too much time sitting around watching television or playing video games. (But if they’re reading a book – don’t bother them! Let them read). And even if kids do go outside, often they are simply “hanging out” with their friends and not getting any exercise at all.

It’s also the case that many families don’t spend enough time with each other. “They grow up so fast,” is a constant refrain. But there is a simple way to both improve your relationship with your kids, and give them a love of exercise at the same time. Go biking together – not only will you be spending time together and getting exercise, but you’ll also be sharing experiences that will stay with all of you for the rest of your life. It doesn’t matter if they’re using a Strider Running Bike or a Mini Della Cruz, there is always time to get your kids into cycling. (Unfortunately they will have to leave their Radio Flyer Big Flyer at home.)

Which brings us back to the car bike rack. Each child has to have their own bike, and mom and dad have to have their own bike, and they all need to be brought along on your trips. So get yourself a bike carrier, and start having fun where you didn’t think you could.

Mountain Biking and indeed cycling in general is one of the most popular sports in the world. In can be used both as part of a fitness regime, commuting to work, in competitive sports, or just as a bit of fun. However, those who are keen cyclists are probably aware that if precautions aren’t taken, there are a number of repetitive-strain injuries that can occur from cycling, especially mountain biking. continue reading »
