Waterskiing – on the to do list for many of us but something we simply don’t have the time or opportunity to actually carry through.
However, if you are presented with the chance to try out this exhilarating hobby, don’t waste it, as nothing can be as glamorous as gliding over the ocean waves being pulled along by a Beneteau or rival models. Waterskiing: Beginner’s Tips
Naturally you will approach your first lesson with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Travelling at high speeds across the water isn’t for everyone, but remember, your first lesson will simply concentrate on mastering the basics, so there’s no need to panic if you have little or no clue as to how to operate the waterski.
To ensure you stay on your feet, it’s vital to build up a healthy rapport with your instructor. Conditions will be changeable out on the water, so you won’t necessarily hear shouts; therefore, visual aids will be required. Make sure you have a full understanding all of your instructor’s hand signals before heading out on the water so you can read his intentions. This will help you to focus and put you at ease, allowing you to fully concentrate on your skiing technique.
If you have any nerves at all, ask your instructor to build speed up gradually, as you will not get anything from the lesson by setting out at impossible speeds. Don’t be afraid to pepper your instructor with questions even if they seem obvious, as this will help the learning process along in the short term.
Study weather conditions closely as you embark on your first lesson. Remember, all the preparation in the world can’t legislate for rough conditions, so if the wind is whipping up and waters are choppy, consult with your instructor to determine the best way to proceed.
Finally, the hardest part of beginner waterskiing is arguably changing direction. Try and maintain your balance as the boat turns and don’t force the issue. Don’t panic if you start to lose your footing, as this is only natural for the first timer – it may take several attempts before you feel comfortable.
