While the echoes of New Year and Auld Lang Syne disappear for another year, the memory of the man behind the origin of the song lives on. Burns’ Night on the 25th of January will mark the two hundred and fifty second birthday of the Scottish poet and a lyricist Robert Burns.

Regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic Movement, Robert Burns was born on the 25 January 1759, two miles south of Ayr, in Alloway, South Ayrshire, Scotland.

Regarded as the national poet of Scotland, Burns is referred to in different ways, including The Bard, Bard of Ayrshire, Robden of Solway Firth, Rabbie Burns and Scotland’s Favourite Son. The word ‘Bard’ in medieval Gaelic and British culture related to a professional poet, employed by a patron, such as a monarch or nobleman, to commemorate the patron’s ancestors and to praise the patron’s own activities.

Although Burns produced many famous poems, of all, Auld Lang Syne is the one that is best known and remembered. Written by Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional Scottish folk song, it is best known in most English-speaking countries and is primarily sung to celebrate the start of the New Year after the stroke of midnight.

Robert Burns died on the morning of 21 July 1796 at the age of just 37. Today, Burns’ Night or Burns’ Supper is celebrated around the world on 25 January, and is still more widely observed than the official Scottish national holiday of Saint Andrew’s Day.

So whether Scottish or not, on the 25th of January, join the world and raise a glass in celebration for the Scottish poet Burns.

When another year is coming to an end, it can only mean one thing; it’s time to make your New Year’s Resolution. Your vow could be to make a radical lifestyle choice or to use the landmark to achieve an unfulfilled life goal.

Unfortunately, the realities of the daily routine often mean even the most well-intended New Year’s resolutions are doomed to failure, but there are ways in which you can improve your chances of staying the distance. Read on to find out some useful tips on how to keep New Year’s resolutions.

Keeping New Year’s Resolutions: Top Tips

When mulling over New Year’s resolution, it’s important to be realistic. Change is never easy, so don’t condemn your resolution to failure by going over-the-top with your aims. Whilst there’s certainly merit in aiming as high as possible with a resolution, it’s sensible to set a goal that you actually stand a fighting chance of fulfilling.

For instance, if you are planning to give up drinking, try and set a realistic timeframe to phase out your regular alcohol consumption instead of stopping overnight. This is far more sensible looking ahead to the long term, as it’s one that will seem less of a passing fad. Following this strategy, you could cut out drinking in the working week, before restricting yourself to a treat at weekends. A gradual approach to changing your lifestyle is more likely to succeed than a radical overhaul, as the latter route often ends in disappointment.

Try not to become disheartened if you occasionally have to break your resolution in certain social situations. As long as you do not use this opportunity as an excuse to cast the resolution to one side, it shouldn’t do any real lasting damage to your overall goals. However, to avoid this problem altogether, it’s best to be frank and forthright about your intentions with friends and family so you do not bow to peer pressure. Real friends will support your decision and will avoid placing temptation your way.

The New Year may also be the perfect opportunity to embrace a new you. Yes it’s a tired old cliche, but there really is no better time to take stock and try something daring. A New Year resolution doesn’t have to focus on boring old good intentions. Sometimes it can be the spark needed to take up a new hobby. Whether it’s braving freezing sea waters in Brighton, hiking the Scottish Highlands or skydiving in Shropshire, it doesn’t really matter what the activity is, simply that you leave all your inhibitions at the door and and try it.

It is safe to say that the plans for Christmas and New Year have already started and many people are thinking about their New Year breaks plans already and who can blame them, it is just over a month away now and it makes perfect sense to start putting together some kind of master plan for this.

Get The Invites Out

The invites are going to have to go out as soon as possible and this is before the Christmas holidayseven begin to kick in. Even if you are still unsure of the venue that you are going to choose for this New Year just getting the time sorted out is something that is a must do thing. You can then send out the invites and wait for notice on how many people are going to be coming and how many people are perhaps not going to make it there.

Venue Booking Time

If the venue of choice will be your own home then this is always a good thing, if not then you need to know what to book and where. When it comes to booking a venue you have to know that booking in advance is the thing to do because so many people are trying to do what you are doing, it really helps to book way in advance.

Money, Money, Money

You must also realise that running a party like this is not a cheap thing to do and there are so many costs to think about. You will have to supply all of the food and drinks of course but when it comes to the clearing up this will have to all be done too!

In the end it might be cheaper to go for hotels in Devon and have your New year there!
