2. Hou Gang Tenements (murdering ghosts)

This is amongst the most scarey of hauntings, as the spirit in question is said to have murdered a woman in the flats. It is also said that the person who was murdered by the ghost screams at night, waking up most of the buildings residents, needless to say people generally don’t stay in the building too long.

3. Jerome Grand Hotel in Jerome, Arizona (the old hospital ghosts)

The Grand Hotel started it’s spooky life as one of the most advanced hospital facilities in Arizona. It’s patients where mostly from the local Jerome mines, and the techniques used there were well known across the U.S. but when the mines closed and the towns population was reduced to only a handful of people, the hospital was closed down. For years it stood abandoned and people that visited the area mentioned of a women in white standing on the balcony and the remaining residents of Jerome said they could hear screams coming from the hospital. In 1994 the old hospital was purchased and turned into the Jerome Grand Hotel, the hotel opened it’s doors in 1997. Reports tell of hotel visitors having see a lady dressed-up in white in their sleeping accommodation or on the balcony, doors in the hotel open on their own accord, lights turn on and off and others mention that the hotels lift is haunted by a young man.

The young man Claude Harveys body had been found in the elevator shaft in 1935 and the women is thought to have been a patient who died after leaping from the hospital window.

4. Amityville Horror House (Fact or Fiction)

Probably one of the most famous ghost stories ever, the Amityville Horror started it’s public life as a book entitled The Amityville Horror: A True Story. Many people discounted the novel as a work of fiction by writer Jay Anson, playing on the real events of 1974 when the DeFeo family were killed in the Amityville house.

The entire family were murdered in one night, parents Ronald and Louise were shot in bed, the four children where also shot while they slept. Ronald Jr was the only person found alive in the house and so was arrested for the murders of his entire family. The thing that people did find strange was that all of the family were killed facing down and seamingly being held down. Another odd fact was that the children had not woken up whilst the killer muredered their parents, even though a very loud rifle was used.

The killings had upset the quiet community in Long Island, but people did resign themselves to tha fact that Ronald Jr the son had simply lost his mind.. A full year had passed until the house was sold to another family the Lutzes, George and Kathy Lutz, along with their three children.

Tormented by an unseen force, the family were subjected to doors ripped off hinges and even cloven footprints in the snow outside the door. even worse, green slimes oozed from the walls, huge swarms of insects would hit the windows and a priest that the family asked to bless the house was driven away from horrible voices.

The Lutzes left the house after only 28 day, leaving all their possessions in the house and telling the press what had happened, it was then that people began to wonder if Ronald Jr really had been guilty of his families murder.

5. Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana

This ancient plantation will have it’s fair share of bad history, but one inparticular has stayed with it, in the form of a slave named Chloe. Chloe may have worked in the owners home and had tried to protect other slaves from him. In an effort to find out what Woodroff intended to do to the others such as hurt, rape or send them away, Chloe would listen in on his conversations. Wooddroff discovered her snooping one day and cut off Chloe’s ear. Wearing a green bonnet to hide her disfigured ear, Chloe remained as the house slave.

Some time after Chloe had her vengence, she poisioned a birthday cake for the children, and murdered both Wooddroffs children and his wife. But the other slaves were appalled by her slaughter of the children and Chloe was hanged by the slaves in the fields and her body cast into the river.

It is said that Chloe can be recognised by her green bonnet, she stands by peoples beds and is seen wandering about the grounds.

6. The Bell Farm – Adams, Tennessee, US (the Bell Witch) TTT

A man called John Bell became famous over the awful business of being murdered by a spirit.

The ghost or witch was meant to be connected to Kate Batts,who was Bells neighbour but whom had fallen out of favour with the Bells over a purchase of some slaves for the property. The first signs of the spirit was through banging and scratching on the walls, and then the Bell children were affected. The youngest of the Bells children Elizabeth was attacked first, found most mornings covered in deep scratches and bruises. The father John Bell had tried to keep the events hidden from the community but when he began to fall ill, others began to see the manifestations for themselves, they reported seeing John Bell attacked my something while lying in his bed and cups of black poison were found by his bed side then would disappear.

After his death from what people believed to be poison, the haunting did stop for a time, but then it would start up again. The ghost moved on from the house and now is said to haunt a local cave, the Bell Witch Cave.

7. Ballygally Castle – Ballygally Bay, Ireland (Lady Isobel Shaw)

as with most castles Ballygally in Ireland is haunted, it is said that the castle has a few restless ghosts. One of the spirits is Lady Isobel Shaw who was shut up in a room by her husband, and starved to death.. The second is of Madame Nixon who used to live in the house, she can generally be seen and heard walking around the halls in her silk dress.

the other ghosts that haunt the castle are soldiers, these would have defended it against attack. They are said to march into the castle grounds dressed in full uniform and tease and scare the guests.


8. The White House (the Dead Presidents)

The White House, the worlds most famous address is also said to be haunted, preisdents and first ladies have sworn to seeing ghosts in its grandious halls. Abraham Lincoln can usually be seen wandering the hallways, Eleanor Roosevelt confirmed that she had one seen the ghost and a clerk in the house had backed this sighting up saying that he had seen Lincoln bedroom, sitting on the bed removing his boots.


9. Bobby Mackey’s Music World in Wilder, Kentucky (Demons)

When Jane and Bobby Mackey bought and converted the old warehouse into a club, they had no idea of its past. The bar had once been an old slaughter house in the 1850’s and the well beneath that had caught the animal blood had been used for satanic worship when the slaughter house had closed down. Rumour goes that it was turned into a speakeasy in the 20’s, and had it’s fair share of unsolved murders.

In 1976 after the Mackeys converted the space, it is said that the spirit or demon that occupied the building had attacked many people, from throwing beer glasses to pushing people down the club stairs.

10. Borley Rectory

The Rectory is said to be the site of many haunting’s, that eye witnesses cannot dismiss away. The most active of the house spirits is said to be a nun who throws objects at visitors, she has also written on walls. As it happened when the cellars were cleared and work had begun on the house in 1943, the jaw bone of a young women was found. This is thought to be the remains of the nun that was the most active spirit, it is uncertain whether she had been murdered.


11. Woodburn in Dover, Delaware (3 ghosts)

This house in Delaware is said to be haunted by the owners father an older gentlemen, who is dressed in a powdered wig and ruffled shirt. The owners only became aware of the ghost when a visitor to their home told them of the gentlemen on the stairs. The house is also haunted by two other ghosts, a tiny girl and a runaway slave whom is said to scream at night from the garden.


12. Hannah Mansion in Indianapolis, Indiana (ghost slaves)

Haunted by a gang of slaves, this house was not only a home, but was a stop on the underground railway connection. One night a group of slaves who perhaps had been travelling or working on the railroad were waiting in the basement, when an oil lamp had been knocked over and they had all burnt to death. The deaths were covered up my the house owners and the bodied buried in the basement. It is said that the restless spirits still haunt the houses basement and are also seen hiding in shadows in the house itself.


13. Madeley Court Hotel (Eerie laughter)

Built in the 1500’s and featured in the hauntedhotelguide Madeley Court Hotel, next to Virgins V festival in Weston Park, the hotel is said to have a number of manifestations from Victorian maids and monks to eerie disembodied laughter. The original timber staircase is thought to date back to the 1500’s and is where most of the activity is centered.

14. Ightham Mote House (The Lady in the Wall)

The ghost that haunts this place is that of Dame Dorothy Selby, she is said to have been involved in the plot to blow up Parliament. She had sent a letter off to her cousin Lord Monteagle warning him of the plot in order to save his life, the letter however had put stop to the bombing of parliament and sent many of those behind it to their death. The awful thing was that friends of those who were caught for planning the plot, grabbed the Dame and walled her up in a tiny room of the tower to die.

Worman who had been brought in by the owners to investigate a draft, that came from the tower. They had of course discovered the remains of Dame Dorothy and no source of the coldness that the owners described.


15. The Stanley Hotel (REDRUM)

Famous for it’s role in the Kubrick movie ‘The Shining’, just the idea of staying a night in the Stanley Hotel would terrify most people. What is even more worrying is that the actual building itself is haunted, it is Author Steven King stayed there while writing the book. Although the ghosts in the Stanley do not seam to be malicious in anyway just really active and talkative.

Guests of the hotel have reported shadows in their room, doors swining open, ghostly footsteps and talking. We have included video footage of a ghostly voice recorded my the ‘Ghost Hunters’.

Can we see the first glimmers of a housing market recovery in Sussex? According to the latest government figures, the housing market is showing some signs of recovery.The only thing slowing it down appears to be a lack of properties on the market. Activity may have picked up, but price levels seem to have returned to where they were several years ago, with the average house price in Sussex for the first quarter of 2009 being £202,952. continue reading »
